Lake Mary is the largest and most developed lake found in the Mammoth Lakes area. The lake, located in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, is popular for its recreational activities. Activities in or around the lake include fishing, boating, hiking, kayaking, biking, and photography.
Lake Mary and the Mammoth Lakes Basin is accessible by car in the summer and fall via Lake Mary Road. The road is generally open from June through September, weather permitting. Once you leave the center of town, the drive is approximately 5 miles. During winter and spring, Lake Mary Road closes at Tamarack Resort near Twin Lakes due to snow. Access to the lake is only accessible by hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
Lake Mary is one of the most popular fishing lakes in the area. Anglers can fish for rainbow trout, brown trout, and brook trout. Trout stockings occur throughout the fishing season.
Boating is a another popular activity on Lake Mary. This includes motorized and non-motorized boats. Sailing is not allowed and neither is swimming. There are two rental boat marinas found on the lake, one on the north shore and another on the south shore. These marinas do not have boat ramps, so if you want to use a boat, you will need to rent one or carry your own down to the shore.
Those without a boat or kayak will find plenty of areas to fish from the shore. Some of the best spots to fish are on the west shore, east shore, and north shore.
Surrounding Lake Mary are many campgrounds. On the northern side is Lake Mary Campground with its 46 sites. On the southern end of the lake is Coldwater Campground with its 77 sites. Located to the east of the lake is the smaller Pine City Campground with its 10 sites. All three campgrounds are within walking distance of Lake Mary.
